My friends are up to some pretty amazing things. From building tiny homes to writing books, I am seriously inspired. Last weekend I was lucky enough to participate and document Ashley’s first book signing for her new book: Baked Doughnuts for Everyone.
Being friends and living in the same area, Ashley and I talked about all the recipe inventing and testing she was doing throughout the whole process. I remember talking about creating an avocado frosting over lunch one day. I even got to take a few samples off her hands from time to time—lucky me! I distinctly remember the maple sea salt being one of my favorites.
The book signing was at The Cupboard, a trendy and fully equipped kitchen store in downtown Fort Collins.
Ashley’s husband Chris came along for continuous support and a helping hand when samples and books started flying off the shelves.
To start us off, Ashley prepared a few samples ahead of time: chocolate peanut butter cup, maple sea salt, pumpkin spice, cinnamon sugar, apple cider, and molasses. The chocolate peanut butter cup was to die for!
As samples started disappearing quickly, Ashley started demoing how she makes the doughnuts herself. From spooning the flour into a measuring cup to filling the doughnut pan precisely 3-6 mm from the top, she was a seasoned pro!
The book features over 101 different doughnut recipes, all of which are gluten-free and vegetarian. And I promise you, they will not leave you missing anything. The texture and mouth feel is SO spot on for a baked doughnut. It is hard to believe they’re not fried. Included in the book are some incredible photos, tips and tricks, a description of all the flours she uses (including where to buy them), and even a few vegan variations.
From jelly filled, honey lemon rhubarb, gingerbread, and lemon poppy seed, to cornbread, grilled cheese, and everything doughnuts with cream cheese smear, Ashley covered it all. The book even has a recipe for a doughnut your dog will love! Flipping through the book myself, I came across one I cannot wait to make: Chocolate Cayenne with Sweet and Spicy Chocolate Coating. Yikes! I know the husband is going to love that one…I just might even have to make it this morning.
After sampling, demoing, and chatting, it came time for her to mark her first book with a Sharpie. She took it like a boss.
Over the course of two hours, books sold out and samples went fast, which might have partially been my fault—I tried them all.
Each time I try a new flavor, I think it is my favorite! Loved to molasses.
